Item Description

In "Adolf Hitler. Bilder aus dem Leben des Führers," — a 1936 collection of b/w images with German language text—-we find a disturbing embodiment of Hannah Arendt's "banality of evil." This collection of skillfully composed tipped-in small photographs normalizes the Third Reich at its ascent. Arendt argued that great evils are often perpetrated by ordinary people dutifully operating the machinery of society—here, the Nazi propaganda apparatus in collusion with the cigarette industry.
The roster of Nazi officials contributing essays, from Göring to Goebbels, exemplifies the "fearsome, word-and-thought-defying banality of evil" Arendt saw in Adolf Eichmann. That their poisonous ideology is wedded to deadly commercial products underscores the banal monstrosity. Customers pilfering the book out of shame or disgust reenact the "coordinated conscience" of a public both seduced and repulsed by fascism's rise. This volume illuminates how closely intertwined human skill and depravity can be, and how smoothly works of craft and commerce can serve mass death.
