The classic walking cane and stick evolved during the 17th and 18th centuries from the shepherd's crook used by a shepherd to manage their flock and as an aid in defending against attack by predators as well as an aid to balance when traversing rough terrain. In the 1800's walking canes and sticks became an essential part of the European gentleman's wardrobe. It became common for an individual to don a custom hat and walking cane or stick to distinguish their status and wealth. In addition they were an aid to balance and a self defense item protecting one from street crime.
