William Edward Hook (1833-1908) began his career in Chippewa Falls and Neenah Wisconsin in the 1870's. He eventually moved West, settling in Manitou Springs, Colorado in 1885 where he established a successful tourist photography business. Documenting the early years of the Canadian Northwest Mounted Police, the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway, and Cripple Creek, he was much more than a tourist photographer. He had passion for Native Americans, railroads and mining. Moving to Colorado springs he continued to produce many scenes of the local area and Colorado scenery in general. Maniton Caverns, Cave of the Winds, and various mountain and street scenes were among the sites he photographed. This approximate 7½" x 4½" Hook photograph is of the Pikes Peak Railroad at Windy Point.
The Manitou and Pike's Peak Railway was started by Zalmon G. Simmons, inventor and founder of the Simmons Beauty-rest Mattress Company. Founded 1899, the railroad had limited service to the Halfway House Hotel. It was the first train to reach the peaks summit in 1981.
The photograph is in very good condition.
