[Locke, David Ross]
Nasby, Petroleum V., Illustrated by Thomas Nast. Ekkoes from Kentucky: Bein a Perfect Record Ur the Ups, Downs, and Experiences Uv the Dimocrisy, Doorin the Eventful Year, 1867, Ez Seen By a Naturalized Kentuckian. Boston: Lee and Shepard Publishers, 1868.
Maroon stamped cover with gilt pictorial spine titles. 12mo, 324 pages. Frontispiece, tissue guards intact, 7 plates by Thomas Nast. The author was "Perfesser uv biblikle polity in the Southern Military and Classicle Institoot." First edition. Locke's satire on Reconstruction, written in dialect throughout and wonderfully illustrated by Thomas Nast. The many Nast illustrations, mostly full-page, have his usual bite and incisiveness. An uncommon item of typical work by Locke and by Nast, who met in 1867 and became fast friends. Nast had admired Locke's work for the "Toledo Blade" and subsequently lustrated this book and Nasby's "Swingin' Round the Cirkle." Nasby, like Artemus Ward and Orpheus C. Kerr, was part of a new movement in American humor, arising in or affecting origins in the American West, speaking conversationally in a "salty and satirical" tone, and very social in their concerns. Locke painted his character of Nasby as a shiftless, lazy, ignorant "Copperhead" who favored the Democrats and slavery.
Lincoln and Sumner valued Nasby's work very highly and kept his work close at hand for reference. Lincoln, out of the West, found a familiar tone in Nasby's work and their views of comedy resonated closely. The humor is sometimes broad with overtones of racism. Chapter titles include, "The Amnesty Proclamation." "The Patriarchal System," "School Books for the South,"
"The Negro Question", "The Connecticut Election",
"The Suffrage Question" and several
others. Covers soiled, wear to extremities. Contents bright with no foxing. Wright 1568. BAL 11821.
