Item Description

Brainerd, David. "The Life of the Rev. David Brainerd: Abridged from Authentic Sources." By Rev. William H. Norris. New York: Pub. by T. Mason and G. Lane; J. Collord, Printer, 1839. 72 pages, frontispiece, 14 cm. Contemporary binding, thin, leather spine, and corners over marbled boards; unusual format for this title. In acceptable condition, like foxing and toning, front hinge appears, have been re-glued at some point.

"The Life of the Rev. David Brainerd" is a biography of the prominent American missionary, David Brainerd, who played a significant role in the Great Awakening, a religious revival that swept across America in the 18th century. The book is an abridged version of Brainerd's original diary and other authentic sources, compiled by Rev. William H. Norris, and issued for the Sunday School Union of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The editors preface refers to David Brainerd as an apostle to the Indians of New York and Pennsylvania, whose experience ” will be found to come up fully to the doctrine of the Methodist, episcopal church, as taught by Mr. Wesley, on Christian Perfection “.

The biography provides a fascinating insight into Brainerd's life and work, including his struggles with illness and his missionary efforts among the Native American communities in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The book also offers a glimpse into the religious and cultural context of the time, shedding light on the impact of the evangelical movement on American society.
