Antique Coromandel & Brass Bound Writing Slope With Inkwells, Secret Compartment And Key

An elegant antique writing slope crafted from richly figured coromandel or coromandel-style hardwood with brass corner bindings, brass carry handles, and decorative brass inlay. The sloped lid opens to reveal the original red writing surface, fitted interior compartments, removable lidded pen tray, and two square glass inkwells.

Beneath the writing surface is a concealed storage compartment featuring a ribbon lift and locking mechanism, a desirable feature found in quality 19th-century writing slopes. The box retains its key and appears to engage the locking mechanism. Also included is a Pelikan 4001 Königsblau ink bottle with original box found inside the compartment.

Writing slopes such as this were popular during the Victorian era and served as portable desks for correspondence, document storage, and writing supplies. The attractive grain, brass appointments, fitted interior, and secret compartment make this an appealing example for collectors of antique desk accessories and writing antiques.

Antique condition consistent with age and use. Retains key, removable pen tray, fitted compartments, and two glass inkwells. Surface wear, scratches, finish wear, minor losses, and age-related imperfections throughout. Writing surface shows wear and staining from use. Brass hardware displays oxidation and patina. Interior compartments and hidden storage area remain present. Pelikan ink bottle and box included as found.
