*Appraised by JL Fine Art Appraisal - they stated "The market for Estelle Armstrong has historically been extremely limited, with only a handful of works having come up for auction for prices realizing up to approximately $300. In the general auction market, comparable paintings by twentieth century artists of relatively similar origin and/or stature have sold for prices from approximately the hundreds to the low thousands."*

Mrs. Armstrong studied at the following art institutions: the California School of Design, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League. Her instructors included American art icons William Merritt Chase, Charles Hawthorne and Henry Bayley Snell. She also received training in Europe, working with instructors in Florence, Rome, Venice, Holland and Paris.

A wonderful portrait of Estelle Armstrong by Annie Traquair Lang, also a Chase pupil, exists in her family collection.

She exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the American Watercolor Society, National Association of Women Painters & Sculptors (Eloise Egan prize), the Plastic Club, Philadelphia and the Montclair Art Museum (award).

She taught at the St. Louis University, the University of Oklahoma, New York University (1927-1943) and the Montclair Art Museum (after 1943).

Her work is in the Montclair Art Museum, the Rockefeller Collection, the University of Oklahoma and the University of West Virginia.

Her work is primarily still life, genre and landscape, with a strong impressionist influence. Lolita Flockhart in Art and Artists of New Jersey notes that her work was known for its harmony of composition and beauty of color.

Mrs. Armstrong was married to the William T L Armstrong, architect, educator and painter who died in 1934.

Estelle Armstrong died in Nutley, New Jersey in 1977, receiving a tribute in the New York Times from the New York University Architectural Alumni Association.
