Item Description

Our Wonderful Client was kind enough to share the amazing history that accompanies these admirable items.
-The medals were awarded to my grandfather, Col. Stanley R. Scarborough. Drafted into WWII he fought in the campaign against Rommel (The "Desert Fox") across North Africa. Once Rommel was captured, my grandfather's unit fought the bloody campaign up the boot of Italy. After the war, he returned home to my grandmother and my mom (then almost 4 years old, meeting her for the first time). He helped run the family hardware store until duty called again and he volunteered to go fight in Korea with the Air Force. He continued to serve after the war, becoming a career officer, eventually retiring in the mid-1970s. That service took them to England in the 50s (RAF High Wycombe outside of London). As a liaison between the US and Royal Air Forces, they got to meet the royal family at an air show. ("The Queen Mum was so gracious," my grandmother said.) Then they were stationed in Madrid, Spain for a couple of years. He was on a base decommissioning committee that was shuttering U.S. bases in Europe that were no longer needed after the war. They came back to the states and he served in SAC (Strategic Air Command) until he retired.

The flag was presented to my grandmother by military honor guard at his funeral in 1991. When she passed away in 2000, the flag, medals and newspaper passed to me. The papers are ones she saved during the war and then after (the Moon Landing, etc.). Any Stars and Stripes editions from the 40s would have been ones he saved. If there are Stars and Stripes from the 50s or 60s, those would have been ones they saved while serving overseas. Any Stars and Stripes from the 80s would be ones I saved during our time in Germany, when my father was posted to the U.S. Embassy there.
