Antique framed map with center in circular relief of the North Pole - Pole Arctica by Frederik de Wit Amsterdam. Frederik de wit (1629-1706), was a Dutch cartographer and artist. Most special collections libraries, rare map libraries and private collections hold copies of De wit’s atlases and maps. The center part has been raised to highlight the circular nature of the North Pole and is surrounded by the hand colored corners featuring local people of the 17th century. Provenance of the Elisabeth Babcock Estate of Woodbury Long Island New York. Elisabeth Babcock was first cousin of John D. Rockefeller, and her Gold Coast Mansion was featured in magazines and periodicals of the day where the maps can be seen. Please see photos for condition. Please note there are separations of the paper from the raised center. Map has been professionally framed in a shadowbox frame. Map measures 19” x 17”. Frame 26.75” x 25”. The last 3 photos are of the Elisabeth Babcock residence and if you look closely, you can see the maps on the wall.
