China Cabinet Breakfront By Schmeig & Kotzian

Beautiful mahogany breakfront in very good condition. Craftmanship on this sideboard is exquisite. This piece is very similar to one currently being offered on 1st Dibs for a much higher price.

This elegant two part mahogany breakfront sideboard or china cabinet is in two parts: an upper case with a decorative carved cornice with contrasting key inlay, surmounting four glazed glass doors which open to three adjustable shelves with plate rails. The lower piece has three felt-lined divided flatware frieze drawers over four pullout / pull-out serving shelves above four doors. The two center doors open to three linen drawers, flanked by two single shelf storage compartments. The base features beautiful crotched mahogany veneer drawer fronts with cockbeaded borders and heavy brass pulls, with the crotched mahogany continuing on the door fronts, accented with applied decorative borders and corner rosettes. A single key locks all doors. The piece is marked:

Schmieg and Kotzian was a furniture firm in business in London from 1899 to 1907, when they moved to New York. After Karl Schmieg died in 1949, the company continued on for a few more years, but was then sold. Both Karl Schmieg and Heinrich Kotzian were German cabinet makers, who were trained in the traditional European apprentice system. Their factory was on east 72nd Street for many years, but their show room was in mid-town.

In 1925, Karl Schmieg was one of the U.S. representatives at the Art Deco exhibit in Paris.
