Antique French Morbier Tall Case Clock

This is a fully-functioning classic French Provincial tall case clock. The stamped brass surround dates this clock to the second half of the 19th century. The enameled porcelain dial and ornate brass clock hands are all in excellent condition. The dial is labeled Rousseau-Drapeaud à Saint Sauveur de Nuaillé, which is likely the name of the business that sold the clock and the name of the small town on the coast of France where they were located. The brass surrounding the dial features a peacock displaying all of its plumage.

The especially ornate pendulum is brass. It was made using a hammering technique to create the design called repousse The weights that drive the clock are the correct cast iron style, but are not antique. The wooden case is just over 89 inches tall and is hand painted with flowers. The case is antique, but the clock and case did not start out together. It just adds to the character. An antique winding handle is included.

The clock strikes on the hour and half hour, and in a unique twist, repeats the hour two minutes later. The thinking is that this gave the local farmers and townspeople who purchased them and extra reminder.

This type of clock takes its name from the village of Morbier, France in the Jura mountains near the border with Switzerland. In the late 18th century farmers in the region began to manufacture clock parts during the cold winter months. Clocksmiths would purchase the parts and assemble the clocks and then sell them.

This clock has collected its share of bumps and bangs over the years but is an elegant showpiece that actually works. It would be a wonderful addition to your home.
