Item Description

We are offering a SUPERB original circa 1880 oil painting by well listed Italian artist AURELIO TIRATELLI [Rome, 1842-1900]. It is a stunning example of his work, traditional to his style and subject matter. Centers upon a grouping of peasants at work, anchored by the coffered underside of a farmhouse and distant arch. The bulk of his paintings showcase the Italian countryside, and the festivities and people therein. This painting is a larger example- measuring 22.5" by 34.5", NOT including the outer frame [which is more contemporary, mounted in the last 40 years]. It is kinetic, with plenty of activity to view. In the foreground, a wooden cage is set atop the straw-covered floor, with a smattering of chickens and rabbits. Billows of smoke are emerging from a wood-fed stove, which is being tended by one of the women. Several other maidens are processing grain or wine, while a man in the distance is balancing a large wooden basin on his shoulder, with further workers on the staircase. In the far window, a cat is perched lazily on the sil. It is signed A. TIRATELLI, ROMA on the bottom left. An overall wonderful composition.
***I have shown several auction records of his works, including 2 sales from CHRISTIE'S AUCTION totaling $89,625 and $50,400, as well as another painting with a $20,000-$30,000 pre-auction estimate.

There is a 3" L-shaped tear in the canvas, which is very clean and would not require much in-painting if repaired by a conservator. I have shown photos from both the front and back. Put in the hands of a proper conservator, it can be easily remedied [highly recommended, because the value would increase exponentially]. Painting has scattered crazing, but shows quite well. With former auction results near 6-figures for his works, this is an important painting. VERY low reserve, considering.
