This artist oil on canvas depicts 2 black male grouse birds fighting for a mate. The female is hidden in the brush-can you find her? Black grouse have a very distinctive and well recorded courtship ritual or game. At dawn in the spring, the males strut around in a traditional area and display whilst making a highly distinctive mating call. This process is called a Lek - the grouse are said to be lekking. Black Grouse can be found across Europe (Swiss-Italian-French Alps especially) from Great Britain (but not Ireland) through Scandinavia and Estonia into Russia. Their numbers are slowly depleting. Signed and dated in lower right, probably by an artist who may have observed the ritual itself. Painting measures 26" long X 8" high. There is a small nick/chip in the top right side of the frame.
of the frame towards the back, not visible when hung (see photo).
