What got you interested in secondhand, vintage, and antique items?
I grew up going to antique shows and flea markets with my parents. They've been collecting antique advertising and furniture since the 1970s, and they've curated an unbelievable collection. I knew from an early age that I wanted my house to be full of antique and vintage things because it helps create such a magical and unique space.
What are the one or two things that you always find yourself bidding on/looking for when shopping secondhand?
Advertising and Pyrex. I started collecting Planters Peanut and Heinz advertising while I was in high school. The collection expanded to tins, signs, and anything else fun I could find.
In 2012, my grandma downsized to move into assisted living, and she gifted me part of the primary fridgie set. I fell in love with those fridgies and started hunting for more Pyrex the next day. Pyrex led me down the rabbit hole of collecting mugs, glassware, and salt and pepper shakers.
Advertising reminds me of my childhood, and Pyrex reminds me of family and the amazing dinners and get-togethers we had. Nostalgia plays such a major role in collecting.
What's your absolute favorite item ever purchased at an estate sale or online auction?
About 23 years ago, I won an auction for a 1940s Mr. Peanut Tin Lid Streamline Counter Jar. It has a gorgeous green tin lid with Mr. Peanut standing proud and tall. It is one of my favorite things in my collection.
Any tips or advice for online auction or estate sale newbies?
Do your research, ask questions, and have patience. I honestly think the research is one of the best parts of collecting. Research books are rich with information and are one of the best sources to educate yourself.
