What got you interested in secondhand, vintage and antique items?
I actually started thrifting mostly vintage clothing in high school, trying to stretch my part time job budget as far as I could. I fell in love with the thrill of the hunt, and have been shopping secondhand ever since. When we moved into and started fixing up our 1895 Victorian house several years ago, I became obsessed with filling my home with a collection of vintage and antique finds. These days, I can usually count the number of new items in any given room in my house on one hand.
What are the one or two things that you always find yourself bidding on/looking for when shopping secondhand?
I'm a sucker for blue and white chinoiseries. No pretty plate is safe from being added to my walls! I've also recently started collecting black Wedgwood jasperware, which is harder to find, but all the more exciting.
What's your absolute favorite item ever purchased at an estate sale or online auction?
My favorite piece I've ever found (at least this year!) is a turn of the century antique seamstress' table with the most delicious spindly legs. It makes such a statement as a kitchen island!
Any tips or advice for online auction or estate sale newbies?
My advice is to just have fun! Don't get hung up on the ones that got away, the right piece for you is always out there. Just keep at it, and soon you'll be obsessed.
