Item Description

Provenance: This "shade" comes from the historic Ives Family Estate. The Ives family came to America from England. Although there were several notable members, the one who is the most famous is Charles Edward Ives - A classical music composer who is in the same caliber as the most renowned classical composers known today. This could possibly be a "shade" of Charles Edward Ives himself.

history: Silhouettes are a form of art that consists of a solid, dark-colored (usually black) representation of people, animals or objects, as seen from profile. The first silhouettes (although they were not called that originally) date back to the 18th-century and were an affordable alternative to the expensive miniature portraits that were the fashion at the time. It was centuries before the advent of photography and the easiest way to record someone’s portrait was by creating a contour of their profile.

The interior of a silhouette is featureless, and the whole is typically presented on a light background, usually white, or none at all. The silhouette differs from an outline, which depicts the edge of an object in a linear form, while a silhouette appears as a solid shape. Silhouette images may be created in any visual artistic media, but were first used to describe pieces of cut paper, which were then stuck to a backing in a contrasting color, and often framed.
